Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to the most important questions about online vehicle registration in Bentheim.

General questions

What is online vehicle registration and how does it work?

Internet-based vehicle registration (i-Kfz) lets you complete registration procedures fully digitally – without visiting the registration office. You identify yourself with your ID card or passport, submit the details from your vehicle documents and then receive the papers and stickers by post. Via iKfz Niedersachsen you start the process and are guided to secure online processing by our service partner.

What are the advantages of online registration?

You save yourself an appointment, the journey and waiting time: the process is possible around the clock from home and is usually handled considerably faster than the classic trip to the authority. Plates and documents arrive conveniently by post.

Is online registration secure?

Yes. Identification is carried out using your ID card or passport, and data transmission is SSL-encrypted throughout. This ensures that only authorised persons can initiate a procedure.

Which documents do I generally need?

As a rule you need a valid ID card or passport, registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) and part II (vehicle title), as well as the eVB number from your car insurer.

Which registration office is responsible for me?

The registration office at your place of residence or the keeper's registered address is responsible. You will find an overview of the registration offices in Bentheim with addresses and contact details on our “Registration offices” page. During online processing, the responsible office is determined automatically from your data.

Can I track the status of my application?

Yes. After submitting you receive a confirmation and can follow the processing status of your case with our service partner. You will additionally be informed about key steps by email.

Which payment methods are accepted?

Depending on the procedure, you pay the official fees as well as the costs for plates and shipping conveniently via the payment methods offered by our service partner. You see the total amount transparently before completing the order.

What happens if my application is rejected?

If a procedure is not approved – for example due to incomplete information or missing prerequisites – you will be informed and receive guidance on how to correct it. Amounts already paid for services not rendered will be refunded. In individual cases a visit to the registration office may be necessary.

New registration & re-registration

How does a new registration work online?

You select the “New registration” procedure, identify yourself with your ID card or passport and submit the vehicle and keeper data together with the eVB number and the details from the registration certificate. After a successful check you receive the registration certificate and the stickers for your plates by post.

Do I need an appointment for online registration?

No. Online procedures are completed without an appointment and without appearing in person at the registration office.

Can I re-register a used vehicle online?

Yes. A vehicle that was previously registered and later taken out of service can be re-registered online, provided you have registration certificate parts I and II and no technical modifications need to be recorded.

How long does processing take?

Online processing is usually very quick; the vehicle may be driven immediately after successful registration. Shipping of the documents and stickers by post then usually takes a few working days.

What does a new registration cost?

The official fee depends on the procedure. Added to this are the costs for the licence plates and shipping. You will see the specific total price transparently before completing the order with our service partner.

De-registration

Which vehicles can I de-register online?

Cars, motorcycles, trailers and many other vehicles with plates whose security stickers were issued from 2015 onwards can be taken out of service online.

How do I de-register my vehicle online?

You select the “De-registration” procedure, identify yourself with your ID card or passport and enter the data of the plates and of registration certificate part I. After the check, the vehicle is taken out of service.

Which documents do I need for de-registration?

You need a valid ID card or passport, registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) and the vehicle's licence plates.

Can I keep using my plates after de-registration?

Yes, keeping the plates is possible. After taking a vehicle out of service you can reserve or keep a plate for a later re-registration, provided the respective deadlines are observed.

How do I receive the de-registration confirmation?

After successfully taking the vehicle out of service you receive a confirmation digitally or by post. This serves as proof for the insurer and the tax office (vehicle tax).

Can a de-registration be reversed?

Taking a vehicle out of service is not itself “undone”. If you want to use the vehicle again, you carry out a re-registration – which in many cases is also possible online.

What does de-registration cost?

Taking a vehicle out of service is particularly inexpensive compared with other procedures. You will see the specific price before completing the order with our service partner.

Change of keeper

Which documents are required for a change of keeper?

As a rule you need registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) and part II (vehicle title), the new keeper's eVB number and their ID card or passport.

Is a change of keeper possible if one party lives abroad?

Online transfer requires that the new keeper can identify themselves with a German ID card or passport and that a domestic registered address exists. If one party lives abroad, the route via the responsible registration office may be necessary in individual cases.

How long does a change of keeper take?

The online transfer is usually processed quickly. You then receive the new documents and – if the plate is changed – the stickers by post within a few working days.

What does a change of keeper cost?

The fee depends on whether the previous plate is retained or a new one is assigned. You will see the specific total price including any plate and shipping costs before completing the order with our service partner.

Change of address

Which documents do I need for a change of address?

To record a new address you need your ID card or passport with the updated address as well as registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document).

How long does a change of address take?

A pure change of address is one of the fastest online procedures and is usually completed within a short time. If a new sticker or new documents are required, they are sent by post.

What does a change of address cost?

The official fee for a change of address is low. You will see the specific price before completing the order with our service partner.

Personalised plates

Which rules apply when choosing a personalised plate?

A personalised plate consists of the district identifier plus one to two letters and one to four digits. It must still be available and must not contain prohibited letter combinations. You can check availability before registration and reserve the plate.

Do I have to collect my personalised plate in person?

No. With online registration the reserved personalised plate is assigned to your case; you receive the finished plates or stickers by post. Appearing in person is not required.
